Critical Creative Reflection

  1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?

My product did not challenge any conventions. It stayed within its genre. I actually used the videos within the genre to get inspo for this music video because the song that my group chose didn’t release a music video. For one video within the genre they used a split screen throughout the whole video. It also put emphasis on the subject using pans and different lighting. This gave me inspiration for my group’s music video because I also incorporated some split screens in the video. I also was in charge of the costumes, making sure everyone dressed for the occasion, the props, and makeup. For this music video no one was wearing makeup because it wasn’t as significant as the others. Furthermore, the music video did represent a social issue; dealing with long distance. A lot of people may meet someone they have an interest towards but they can’t see them as often as they would like too. In the music video, Harmony and Drake met at a party but Harmony lives on the other side of the country. Many people can relate to this issue which makes the video more enjoyable. The video also represents a particular social group; those that enjoy going to parties. The video also specially is about teens and young adults. The actors within this video were also young.

  1. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?

The different angles and usage of editing makes the video more enjoyable. The video starts out with a low angle that zooms into the 2 subjects. Also, the intro of the music coordinates with the angle. The intro of the music is more instrumental and it adds more to that first impression. The video included a split screen which is unique and you do not see often in music videos. The story line will attract people as well because many may relate and feel the same way. The suspense on whether Harmony and Drake go further into the relationship would make people keep watching it. The song is also a good song and nice to listen to. It is also replayed multiple times with over 180,000,000 views. If this was a professional music video, I would release it on Tiktok and on Youtube. I would publish the full thing on Youtube because that is where most music videos are published. On Youtube, it is also easier to see the amount of likes, views, and the comments. On Tiktok, I would post a snippet of it. The short video would solely be used to promote the music video. It was also leaves people more curious to then go check out the full video on Youtube. Also, TikTok is more popular than Youtube. More teens are on Tiktok and the music video relates more towards that age group. So, the more people that watch it will only lead to more watching it.

  1. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

One thing I learned was that you have to work with people that are not only hard workers but that you are also comfortable with. For my group, I made sure to pick people I knew were smart people who want to actually get their work done. This helped our group to not procrastinate the project and to get it done within the time frame. I was rushing them to film and I didn’t have to constantly bother them into doing the work. I was also comfortable with them. Meeting new people is great but for this project, I needed people I knew well. It created a safe environment for me to film and to get my work done. Another thing I learned was you have to hear other people's suggestions. I made sure that throughout the project, I needed to be open minded to my group mates suggestions. If I didn’t like it, I would suggest something similar but with a few modifications. Also, I made sure they were both comfortable before finalizing that decision. Third thing I learned was that when producing a music video, you need to make sure that everything makes sense. This means in terms of costume, makeup, and props. They play a bigger role in a music video than I expected. They add to the story line and they also help it make sense. I was mainly in charge of all this stuff because it was filmed at my house. So, I had to stay on top of it and I made sure I did.

  1. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

I integrated technology by using an iPhone to record the music video. The iPhone was one of the newer ones so it had good quality. It captured the main subjects and gave the background a blurred look. This helped not only with less editing but it looked nice. It puts emphasis on the subjects without having to do anything. I also used an iPhone because I don’t own a good quality camera. The iPhone was more accessible since everyone in the group had one. Also good quality cameras are expensive and complicated to use. An iPhone was manageable and easier to use for this video. An iPhone was manageable and easier to use for this video. The iPhone was also light weight. It was easy to do all the different camera angles using the iPhone. The zoom in, low and high angles, the pan, etc. These elements were incorporated into the video. I also integrated technology by editing with a software known as AlightMotion. It is a popular editing app and it is easy to use. Inserting the clips alongside the music wasn’t challenging. I wanted to use an editing app that wasn’t going to male the final product choppy. Capcut makes the transition appear choppy and I wanted this music video to be as presentable as possible. AlightMotion is also free on the app store and easy to download. I didn’t want to use a super complicated app that we weren’t familiar with to edit this video. Learning new ways of technology is good but I felt that AlightMotion was the best app to use.
